The Mercedes W123 series name may be rather unfamiliar, but the car isn't. Between 1976 and 1985, Mercedes sold 2.7 million of these classy, dependable luxury cars. Mercedes used the W123 code name for this generation of its big sedan, but it's much better known by its model names - the Mercedes 200, 220, 230, 250, 280 and 300.

The W123 was fairly well protected from the elements, while the paintwork was unsurpassed. But pre-1981 cars can rust badly and even later W123s are likely to have some corrosion. Panel availability is good, although some pattern stuff is ropey so it's best to stick with genuine parts, which cost far more.

The Mercedes-Benz 300D was a diesel powered variant of the W123 Sedan. Introduced for the 1977 model year, the 300 D was powered by Mercedes' OM617.912 inline five engine. This 3.0L diesel powerplant was originally rated at 80hp, but an update for the 1980 model year increased output to 88hp. Power was sent from the engine to the rear wheels.
